Shunkunitai

Summer birds powerfully singing together. 

At the beginning of summer, all the birds come up together.  The male birds sing to find their partners and claim their territories.  Each bird has his or her own favorite points.  It is hard to imagine how they can sing so loudly with such small bodies.  As many kinds of birds voice their beautiful singing, Shunkunitai is very busy with their songs.  As they sing the liveliest in the morning, we recommend you to take a walk before breakfast.

Japanese latest summer starts.  Forests and grasslands change from brown to bright green.  Yellow Thermoses lipinoides and purple Lathyrus japonicus start to blossom all together.  It is very good time to see a big colony of Rosa rugosa Thunb.  In the forest, Anemone flaccida and Maianthemum dilatatum also start to blossom with pretty little flowers.  On the marsh ground, Glaux maritima might be blossoming with little pink flowers.  You can enjoy viewing many kinds of flowers growing in the different environment.  If you get lost in admiration of the beautiful flowers, you will miss the chance to se the birds.

Long beak〜Far Eastern Curlew are staying

It is the biggest kind of Curlew and a unique characteristic they have is a long downward curving beak.  In summer, they live only in Russia and in winter around Australia.  If you are lucky, you can see them. They visit Shunkunitai during their migration.  However, it has been recently confirmed that some of them spend the summer there.  Their favorite food is crabs.  Their long beak is very useful to catch the crab in its hole in ground.  At the mudflats, you can see that they eat only the body after flinging off the legs of the crab.
